Namma Bengaluru: Tessellation
A classroom exercise that I took it forward exploring 'Tessellation' in Kannada Typography.
A tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps (Wikipedia)
PROCESS
Images from the process of cracking the interlocking of letters as well as the interlocking of words as a whole.
One of the easiest ways to start with was to come up with an abstract shape that could tessellate and fit arrange the letters within the boundary so that the word can tessellate.
However, the above approach was shallow and did not justify the choice of using letterforms for tessellation.
INTERLOCKING OF LETTERS
The new approach was to start with individual letterforms (Kannada Script) that can interlock with each other to form the word - Namma Bengaluru.
After a couple of iterations, the letters were interlocked and also had a conjunct (Ma) turned into a nice little heart icon.
INTERLOCKING WORDS
Now that the word was set, the interlocking of this unit (word) had to be cracked. By tweaking the letterforms the vertical stacking was cracked first and eventually the horizontal stacking as well.
